Our College at a glance

Government Ayurvedic College, Balangir is the oldest Ayurvedic institution of Western Odisha, established on Dt.05.05.1975 by the initiation of the eminent personalities and Ayurveda lovers of this locality who bestowed full support to establish the College. The College is situated near 80 Kms from historic Gandhamardhan Mountain which is surrounded by deep forest. Initially the College was functioning at Rajashree Dharmasala in the name of Ayurvedic College Bolangir. Later on it was shifted to its own building at Tulsinagar in 1980 which is situated by the circuit house Road about 2 Kms away from Bolangir Railway Station and 2 Kms distance from Govt. Bus stand. The College covers about 10 acres of land.

This institution was named as Ayurvedic College, Balangir .On 1st July, 1984 it was taken over by the Govt. of Orissa, Health & F.W. Dept and simultaneously with amalgamation of the Saradeswari Govt. Ayurvedic Hospital, Bolangir (opposite to daily market). There after the college was recognized as Govt. Ayurvedic College, Balangir.

The College has made provision of teaching & practical training for U.G. students and PG students of one subject namely Roga Nidan and Vikriti Vigyan . Every year 30 students are being selected and admitted to this College through joint entrance examination, Odisha after passing in +2 Science/equivalent exams securing minimum 50 % marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The name of the course is Ayurvedacharya (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicines & Surgery) approved by the CCIM, New Delhi, and affiliated to Sambalpur University, Burla. The College is running by 40 dynamic, well committed and dedicated teachers and 35 paramedical personnel. The College has strength of approximately 180 students including Internees. Four Post Graduate students of Roga Nidan and Vikriti Vigyan were admitted through P.G Entrance test examination,conducted by the Dept. of Health & F.Welfare ,Govt. of Odisha. Hence forth, the Post Graduate students will be admitted through “All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Examination”.

The College has a good and well equipped library containing 8143 nos. of books and 10 different journals. A separate Book Bank is available for general and SC/ST students. The College is having a well maintained herbal garden in the campus

spreading over about 5 acres of land, containing valuable medicinal plants for practical demonstration of the students. The College has a Mini Pharmacy attached to the department of R.S.B.K., meant for practical training of the students and prepared medicines are being supplied to the O.P.D & I.P.D. of College Hospital. Apart from the general treatment in the hospital, specialized Panchakarma treatment has attracted patients from far distance places of the District and nearby other district also. Good number of surgical patients especially ano-rectal diseases are being treated and cured by application of Ksharasutra therapy. In the College there is a good set-up of Pathological laboratory for the teaching & training to the students & for the investigation of the OPD & IPD patients in general. A Geriatric Clinic is running under the financial support of AYUSH department, Govt. of India on every Wednesday in this College for old aged patients. There are three hostels having an accommodation of 90 students (30 girls & 60 boys).College has its own computer, Internet, Xerox and fax facilities.

Apart from teaching and training to the students the institution is rendering health services through N.S.S. and Red-Ribbon Club, organizing seminars, Symposia, Quiz competition, National Level programme like R.O.T.P., C.M.E. and workshop on scientific terminology etc. as a part of the academic activities. The College is also declared as a Nodal Centre by the Sambalpur University to conduct Ph.D. research study under this institution. The College continues to maintain its rich tradition being devoted to services, discipline and studies.


The college offers Ayurvedacharya (Bachlor of Aurvedic Medicine & Surgery ) course framed by C.C.I.M.( Central Council of Indian Medicine ) , New Delhi and affiliated by the Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar , Burla. It is Five and Half years degree course including one year of Compulsory Rotating Internship Training. The 150 bedded attached hospital of the College along with District Headquarter Hospital, Bolangir provides practical teaching and training to the students during their period of study and also during Internship. At present total students strength is 120 including Internees.

The extension wing of Saradeswari Govt.Ayurvedic Hospital is accommodated with 60 beds with the Out Doors of six clinical departments in College premises since July, 2003.


There has been a Herbal garden occupying an area of about 3 Acres of land in the college campus with separate protection wall.. This garden is being utilized for practical training and identification of various medicinal plants for the students. The garden is at present having 50 Nos. of species and about 150 nos of plants.


One Mini Pharmacy is running in the Deptt. Of Rasashastra & Bhaisajyakalpana under the control of Head of the Deptt.. This pharmacy is being utilized for practical training and teaching of the students of 2nd Prof. B.A.M.S.. Preparation method of various common Medicines , Purification of various metals etc. are being taught to the students in this pharmacy. The medicines prepared in the pharmacy are being utilized in the OPD and IPD of the college hospital.
